Abstract

Food insecurity and malnutrition are topics of great importance today, especially among certain population groups, such as the elderly. This quick literature review aims to examine the impact of food on the vulnerable population, the "elderly." To do so, a literature search was conducted, followed by an analysis of 37 articles, categorizing the results into three different groups: the effects of food and malnutrition in the elderly, the impact of food banks, and diet in the elderly. The findings indicate that food insecurity and malnutrition are significant issues among the elderly population and have been identified as a significant risk factor for both mortality and various negative outcomes, including frailty, unintentional weight loss, an increase in chronic diseases, and quality of life. Furthermore, the importance of the diets consumed is highlighted, revealing various associations between poor and moderate-quality diets and negative outcomes, primarily in terms of frailty. In conclusion, our study encompasses the primary impacts of malnutrition and food insecurity in the elderly population, uncovering multiple negative outcomes in various evaluated aspects.
